The People Behind BrokerVA's Specialists: Coaching, Culture, and Accountability

The People Behind BrokerVA's Specialists: Coaching, Culture, and Accountability

Technology can speed up file work, but its quality still depends on the people doing it and the support around them. At BrokerVA, that support is a dedicated Coach, a Coaching Team, and a culture built on bayanihan. Here is how it works, as part of our series on the human element in mortgage.

Why Do the People Behind the Work Matter?

Because people are most of the work. Freddie Mac's 2024 Cost to Originate Study estimated that personnel is about two-thirds of lenders' production costs, and concluded that technology works best as a strategic enabler alongside changes in process and staffing. Freddie Mac sells digital tools, so weigh its interest, but the finding points to where the work actually sits.

The same is true on the borrower side. In Cotality's 2026 survey, 55% of U.S. buyers said they would prefer working with a person to secure a mortgage. Cotality sells AI-enabled products, and the survey is about borrowers' preferences, not about operations teams, but it shows that people still matter to the people being served. See our summary of the survey.

If people matter that much, how they are supported matters too.

What Does a BrokerVA Coach Do?

Every client gets a dedicated Coach assigned to their team for a 6-week implementation period, to make the transition smooth and set both your team and your VA up for success. Your Coach:

  • Learns your business processes, workflows, SOPs, and expectations, so your VA is aligned to the way you work
  • Gives feedback and recommendations on processes, training, and efficiency
  • Monitors and shares updates on your VA's progress
  • Identifies and addresses potential challenges early
  • Recommends best practices from our experience
  • Keeps your VA aligned with your goals

You are not handed a VA and left to figure it out. See What a BrokerVA Coach Does During Your VA's First Six Weeks.

What Support Continues After Six Weeks?

Support doesn't end when the implementation does. It continues through an ongoing coaching system for both you and your VA:

  • Your VA has direct access to our Coaching Team for real-time guidance, support, and answers, so they stay confident, productive, and aligned with your expectations.
  • Your Coach checks in with you regularly to gather your feedback, discuss your VA's progress, and offer assistance or recommendations.
  • We help your VA keep growing, performing, and adding value over time.

We see ourselves as a long-term partner in your success. See Why Coaching Doesn't Stop at Week Six.

How Does the Coaching Model Support Accountability?

Accountability for the loan stays with you and your licensed people. What the Coaching model adds is a feedback loop around the work. Your Coach learns your expectations, shares updates on progress, and brings your feedback back into how the work is done, and your VA has somewhere to ask questions instead of guessing.

In our view, that matters most at the human checkpoints. The decision points we describe in Where Human Judgment Still Shows Up in Each Stage of the Loan and How to Add AI Without Losing the Human Check are the kind of expectations, escalation rules, and SOPs your Coach learns during the 6-week implementation. They stay yours to define.

What Is Bayanihan, and How Does It Shape the Culture?

Bayanihan is a Filipino word for communal unity and cooperation. The traditional image is of neighbors lifting a house together and carrying it to a new place, because no one person could do it alone. It's how we think about our clients and about each other.

In practice, it shows up in small, consistent ways. Our specialists are encouraged to ask clients one question: how else can I help? Your VA isn't working alone, because the Coaching Team is a message away. And we'd rather say plainly what we can and can't do than overpromise. We wrote more about it in Bayanihan: What a Filipino Tradition Teaches Us About Serving Clients in a Tough Market.

What Can't We Promise?

Coaching doesn't make anyone perfect. People make mistakes, and nothing in this model eliminates that. What we believe it does, in our view, is make drift less likely and problems easier to catch early, because someone is paying attention to the match between what you want and what your VA is doing. We don't have a measured figure for that, and we won't invent one.

We also don't claim to make anyone compliant. That responsibility stays with you.

What Should You Ask Any Provider About Its People?

Put the same questions to every provider, in writing:

  1. Who supports the specialists day to day, and can they reach someone in real time?
  2. Who is your point of contact, and how often will they check in with you?
  3. How does your feedback reach the people doing the work?
  4. What happens after the first period? What continues, and what doesn't?
  5. How are people supervised, and how is their work reviewed?
  6. How does the provider help its people keep growing?

For more, see Questions to Ask Any Provider About Onboarding and Ongoing Support and the people questions (20 to 23) in our security due diligence checklist.

How Does This Connect to Your Cost to Originate?

BrokerVA's goal is to lower your cost to originate. Our 150+ mortgage operations specialists are organized into five stage-based roles, Setup, Disclosure, Closing, Funding, and Post-Closing, and we may be able to tailor roles to what you need right now. We have also partnered with Addy AI for LOA services. The coaching and culture are how we try to keep that support steady over time, not only at the start.

We can't promise a specific saving, since it depends on your operation. On a call, we'll walk through your numbers and show you our cost calculator live. Pricing is customized to your volume and the roles you need. See how BrokerVA works.
